Certification standards – SIL and PL

There is a growing awareness of the standards regarding safety. Most companies are using standards ISO 13849-1 and/or IEC 62061. ISO focuses mainly on mechanical engineering and the value is called PL. While IEC focuses more on electronics and electronic systems and safety level is called SIL.

We use PROFIsafe for safe communication. PROFIsafe is a communication protocol used in industrial automation, designed specifically to enhance functional safety within PROFINET networks. It ensures the safe and reliable transfer of data between safety-related devices, such as sensors, controllers, and actuators, in industrial settings.

This is the FSI 608 – one of our absolute multiturn inductive FSI encoders – and our very first with PROFIsafe communication. It fulfils the latest safety requirements and is certified up to SIL3/PLe

PROFIsafe is a communication protocol used in industrial automation, designed specifically to enhance functional safety within PROFINET networks. It ensures the safe and reliable transfer of data between safety-related devices, such as sensors, controllers, and actuators, in industrial settings.

  • Error detection and correction: PROFIsafe provides mechanisms removing the possibility of errors in the communication, ensuring data integrity in critical safety applications. 

  • Seamless integration: PROFIsafe operates as an additional layer to PROFINET that fulfils the functional safety requirements without additional wiring or infrastructure (black channel principle) 

  • Encoder redundancy: The mechanics and electronics operate with redundancy, meaning even if there is a failure in one value it will always be correlated and detected to maintain safe operations.

SIL and PL – two safety certification levels 

 

What is SIL and PL levels in safety certification? The purpose of SIL and PL is identical. The main differences are that standard 13849-1 (PL) provides a broader framework and includes pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Standard ISO 13849-1 (PL) focuses mainly on mechanical engineering, while standard IEC 62061 (SIL) focuses more on electrical and electronic systems.
